MISSION
Advancing spinal cord regeneration with innovative biomaterial scaffolds.
Spinal Cord Injuries
The spinal cord, an information superhighway extending from the brain, connects your body and enables sensation and movement. Thousands of nerve fibers transmit vital signals, making spinal cord injuries profoundly impactful by impairing movement and sensation.
The Challenge of Regeneration
The spinal cord has a limited ability to repair itself. However, when the protective barrier is breached, it creates a toxic environment that hinders nerve fiber regrowth. These nerve fibers can't regenerate and eventually die, forming a cavity at the injury site. This disruption prevents effective healing and recovery.
Breakthrough in Nerve Regeneration
Fatiha Nothias-Chahir and Sylvia Soares' team at the Institut de Biologie Paris-Seine has developed a chitosan-based biomaterial. This gel reduces cavity formation and promotes nerve fiber regrowth and mobility recovery in rats. It can be injected immediately after trauma or later with impressive results.
Why Medjeduse is Different
Medjeduse tackles spinal cord injuries at their source, unlike exoskeletons or brain interfaces, which merely go around the problem without addressing it directly. Our chitosan-based biomaterials reduce cavity formation and promote spinal cord tissue repair by encouraging nerve fiber regrowth. Our goal is to inject these biomaterials into the injured area to support and enhance the natural repair process.
